"Little Mermaid"

"The Little Mermaid" new commission piece just completed.
I love mermaid stories (even named my daughter Madison after the mermaid in Splash ;) but I rarely paint them. I think its because living near the coast there is so much mermaid art around (and palm trees). Strangely enough though, I chose the most classic mermaid pose and focused on capturing the sense of longing I always felt was the heart of the story.
I think I may have to paint more mermaids!

Print is available here in my little shop

I love the eyes on the mermaid. So big and expressive.

well, i kind of like mermaids ;] and this one has a tender innocence that is endearing. unlike me, who brandishes a sword- that's probably why i like her so much!

Have you ever been over by Pine Island (Florida) near a little artist colony called Matlacha? It's full of mermaids--it just feels as though mermaid artists from all over have congregated there, literally painting their tiny town on a small island strip with vibrant sea motifs. Your painting reminds me of it! And you know how much I love the Little Mermaid story! I too live near the coast and I too (ironically) paint mermaids only on occasion. But they are so intriguing and I always love to see other artists' intrepretations of merfolk. The possibilities are endless!

She is just gorgeous! And, I would never put her in the catagory of palm trees and that kind of mermaid art. She very much feels like the Little Mermaid from the book and I love her!
