Becoming Ophelia

(Work in progress, Becoming Ophelia on wood cradle) I've been quite in love with Ophelia by John Millais since I first saw her in an art history textbook at 19. The term love shouldn't be tossed about carelessly but since I still feel the same way more than 25 year later, I think it’s an apt description. I dutifully studied all the paintings in the text book, memorizing dates and movements, filling countless index cards with notes. Yet I can still remember opening the page to Ophelia for the first time. I don't think I've ever had a such a visceral reaction to a painting in print before or since. (I will admit Goya's "Saturn's Devouring his Children" also struck a chord but of a different note, I was afraid to look at that image for very long) It was a deep and baffling connection. It was not an image I would of consciously choose as my favorite. For one, I got the impression that it wasn't considered important by the way my professor who completely skipped over the section. Secondly, the heroes I valued were strong and clever, not floating in weeds. As a little girl Greek Goddesses were my passion, the Women I adored first names were Wonder and Cat. The characters in Wuthering Heights? I just wanted to slap sense into them. (reading Wuthering Heights for fun in Junior High, you would think I'd of had some grasp of tragic, but alas it was wasted on me)

(Ophelia, The Tate) However there was no denying the draw of this Ophelia, and model Lizzie Siddal. She was my first heroine who’s strength lay in conviction, who’s individuality marked her as other. An acceptance that heroes don’t always survive, much less win. Who cannot help but fall in love with Lizzie who was doomed to become the character who she so famously modeled? The vision of Lizzie floating in a bathtub heated only by candles in the English winter seems as vivid an image as the painting itself.

(study of Lizzie by Rossetti) I’m drawing Lizzie wielding her paintbrush as it gives me some solace to think she had some brilliantly happy times along with the darkness. In a time when that was pretty much unheard of for women, Lizzie took risks in wielding both her beauty and paints.

Better Homes feature

Exciting news! "Follow the Yellow Brick Road" is featured in the fall/winter Better Homes and Gardens storage magazine! Maybe I'll be inspired enough to clean my closet now!

I know its been quiet over here lately. Day job has is great but really eating me for lunch at the same time! My students are so perceptive and motivated, I love working with teens! Only problem is some of my classes are so large I sometimes feel like I'm on a treadmill trying to keep up! *whew*There is a light at the end of the tunnel (and its not a train) next week is fall break and waiting in my studio is a brand new easel! Shhhhh don't tell my Mom I'm assembling it early, its my Holiday present!

Happy May Day!
It's a beautiful time of the year here, I think it calls for planting flowers! I do have my students county art show to work and take down today as well. (Why is it the best holidays are work days?) What perfect timing for the Royal Wedding! My next door neighbor and travel companion threw a Wedding Jubilee Friday night! She is an amazing cook and baked a lemon blueberry cake that was divine and served "Something Blue" drinks.

*tosses confetti* My students won first place in painting and collage for the county, I'm so proud of them and at the same time I have such mixed feelings about judging students work at all. No perfect world I suppose, we just try to make it brighter. "Bells Dancing Sprite"

Pussy Cat, Pussy Cat, Where have you been?

Why we've been to London to visit the Queen!
My girls and I had a grand time in London, our first trip across the pond. I've dreamed of making this trip since, well forever. When I was a little girl my Mom would recite the Pussy Cat visiting the Queen verse to me and I suppose I took it to heart, only by the time I made it to London my heart was more set on seeing Ophelia.

Knowing how inspired I am by the Pre Raphaelites Kris Walderr recommended I have tea at the Morris Room at the Victoria and Albert. My photo doesn't do the room justice, but I wanted to share it as I know many of you love Morris and Burne-Jones as well.

Daffodils were in bloom all over Cardiff!

Isn't this the most charming village? I felt like I'd stepped into a fairy tale.

And look, a tray of fairy cakes just drop a pound in the slot and take a cake. Well they weren't called fairy cakes but in this village don't tell me the thought wouldn't cross your mind! But alas, we ate the cakes and still ended up back home the following week!
I'm certain a piece of my heart was left behind, but that would of happened fairy cakes or not I'm afraid.

Nature Girl

My paintings this year have taken a different turn, is the year of rabbit bringing me more sultry dangerous beauties? I shared them with a close artist friend and she wanted to know where they came from! I have no answer really, I just start sketching and there was a shift, of course I think there will still be more ingénues to paint, but for now I'm enjoying these new intense creatures.
The first is "Nature Girl" She is partially inspired by my favorite song "Nature Boy"

I suppose I should a paint a Nature Boy to go with her?

The next is a piece for Kambriel that I'm painting on wood, oh goodness I'm loving painting on wood! The texture is wonderful and you can be so rough with it. This is a detail of her face (she is yet unnamed) I hope to spend more time on her this weekend.

Hearts and Shadows, Peter Pan

Valentines and fairy tales, Who is the Most Romantic of them All?

Wendy and Peter are my favorite fairy tale couple. What makes the Neverland pair so special? flying children and lost boys? Part of the intrigue for me was that shadow, not as exciting as flying but oh so much more mysterious. Does Peter's shadow only escape in our world or does it slip away from him in Neverland as well?

I couldn't understand why Wendy didn't want to stay in Neverland (of course I could never understand why the Princess would kiss the frog either..wouldn't you rather have a talking frog?) Now that I'm older I can see how Peter wanting her to be the lost boys mother, well isn't the most romantic thing. But she gains her fame by telling stories, which is pretty fantastic.
But that "thimble" kiss, pixie dust flights over London and perhaps even the letting each other go have won my heart!

A new mixed media paper doll, I do love making them. (Probably because needle and thread vex me so!) The Little Mermaid is painted in watercolors. Her tale is a passage out of book of pantomimes about brave little sailors.

Mermaid stories, so filled with contradictions have always been intriguing to me. Some like the familiar Anderson's is filled with longing and sacrifice (see sur la Lune) in contrast we have Undine and Selkie stories. Mermaids are creatures portrayed in wide range of personalities from murdering temptresses to tragic innocents. They are everything feared and admired in females, the sinners and saints of the mythological world.

Somerset Studio Frida with Poppies!

St. Frida the Divine with Poppies

Good news in the post! Look what arrived, my Frida Kahlo inspired mixed media piece will be featured in the Jan/Feb issue of Somerset Studio Magazine. I couldn't be happier really, Frida's story and art is such a powerful inspiration I both longed and resisted the urge to paint her. Finally the poppy's song rang true as one of both loss and hope and I was able to paint this tribute to her.

This year I read a story about Frida to my students and some of them painted large canvases as another student posed in costume as Frida .. they turned out so glorious that we did a "Frida Exhibit" in the library! I can't wait to surprise my students with the Somerset magazine when we get back from break!

Happy Yule!

Holiday time! Most of you know my day job is teaching art in a public school, so hurray for winter break! I'm so fortunate to have time off at the holidays but its still a whirlwind! We took the girls to the cabins at Disney (yes my idea of camping has heating and hot water ;) for a few days family get away which was wonderful.. but when it was time to come home we hit the ground running! Tomorrow I'll slow down and bake cookies with my daughters ( I wait till last minute or I will be the one eating all the cookies!) and preparing for friends and family that will start arriving tonight. I was supposed to clean house today but ended up rearranging furniture and framing art. (I'm sure this isn't a stall tactic ;)

and of course I have visions studio time dancing in my head!

I hope you are staying warm and cozy and doing the things you love this season!

so I do sometimes tell stories....

I created this mixed media piece awhile ago and finally was able to get good photo's (it was very hard to capture!) The front piece is print of my Into the Woods painting, melted wax, petals and papers. The writing in gold is from the above. The back of the canvas is a painting of the wolf , Its a deep canvas and can sit free like a shrine or hang. This is the only piece I've made in this shrine style, This Little Red seemed to call for a hidden wolf.

For the Love of Monsters

A work mate smiled kindly at me yesterday and said, you really like that fantasy stuff don't you?

Oh my, I've let my slip show haven't I?

I've always been one of those odd ducks, you know the ones clutching the fantasy or poetry book. As a little girl I loved Poe (why is no one surprised?). I thought the Bride of Frankenstein was the most beautiful creature ever.

Why Monsters? A little pigtaled girl with her nose in Fangoria at the news stand (no one would buy it for me, if I was lucky I would get a Casper comic!)
I don't like modern scary movies (you know the ones) all gore, no wonder.

Then so eloquently, Mr. Gaiman sums it all up in a quote by Ogden Nash. When asked in this interview, "Why monsters?" He replies with the quote by Nash,
"When there are Monsters, there are miracles"

Which pretty much sums up why Gaiman's stories are so powerful. When I read his tales the characters and places are so very real because there isn't just dark and light but all sorts of gray. He does all this and yet weaves it with such care to the wonder ..miracle that beating heart of whatever beast he has awoken for his tale. Being a caretaker of monsters is no light task, he dares to walk the tightrope and you feel it in every story.

My wicked little "Snow White" drawn after hearing (and seeing) the Atlanta Raido Company perform Gaiman's "Snow Glass Apples" Hope she doesn't come knocking for treats tomorrow night!

Trick or Treat!

It's almost the big day! Masks will be donned, pumpkins carved and apples dipped. We attended a Witches Ball Saturday night and had great fun taking the costumes on a test drive before the big night. I can't wait till our girls join us in their Wonderland best on Halloween!

I never tire of dreaming up new witches, just as a girl I choose being a witch for Halloween more often than not. Although I have to admit when I was a little thing my costumes were those sad things that came in cardboard boxes with thin elastic bands on the masks that would break long before the big night.
I'm pretty sure this is what made my dreams come true one fine October day back in the early 1970's

Julia Cameron, sharing a favorite inspiration

The ethereal world of Julia Margaret Cameron's photography is so sensitive and evocative I feel like I'm stepping through to another world whenever I take time to visit them.

Julia was gifted a camera by her daughter in 1868 as a remedy to loneliness, her children were grown and husband traveling on business. Julia was 48 years old when started taking photos and soon became entranced with photography turning her chicken coop into a dark room!

I find Julia's work so inspiring, not only did she start her work with a new technology quite late in life (and 48 was later then than now!) she seemed to have little regard for the conventions of the medium, reveling in the soft focus, grains and magic that came with the large glass plates. She was a true pioneer.

This piece is her Merlin, so delightfully atmospheric!

Don't you adore the chicken coop story? I love to read the magazine "Where Women Create" but I don't think anyone can top the coop!

St. Frida the Divine

"St. Frida the Divine with Poppies"

Frida is such a powerful figure to me on so many levels, I've longed to paint her but hesitated. I've decided there is no doing her justice I'll just try to pay tribute.

The original is mixed media, the poppies I made by hand and collaged on. I was inspired by the Veteran's Day blooms that my Grandmother wore when I was a little girl. Forevermore poppies represented loss and strength of a feminine nature to me.

I'll be back to teaching next week so I'm very happy to have this piece I've been working on ready to share with you. Sometimes I feel like I'm swallowed up at the beginning of the school year! This year I have a new art room which is large and shiny but I'm still in a state of overwhelm of arranging and organizing it.

All in all though the fall is my favorite part of the school year. The anticipation and eager faces of all those young people starting that adventure of Junior High, nothing like it really!

If you have young people in your life (or adore picture books like I do!) please take a look at this book I just got for my classroom, It is poignant, dreamy and powerful. A beautiful introduction to Frida for even the youngest child.

Queen of Hearts Crown, Where are my tarts?

Well this hatter has completed her crown, I've made a tutorial for the crown, just click the link at the top of the page.
I'd love to see your photos if you make one! Remember you don't have to make a Queen of Hearts crown the pattern can be used for any type of crown a White Queen, or Princess for example. What I like to do is pull out all my magpie supplies (see previous post) at least twice as many as you will actually use so you will have plenty to choose from and spread everything out, mix match and try different things together, you might be surprised what you do end up using! Heavier trims can be attached with hot glue or even wire.
Wouldn't shelf holding a row of these little crowns look divine? Of course I just want to wear mine every day!

Painting the Roses Red

Painting the roses red? I've pulled out all my red and rosy scraps, bits and bobs. You see Dragon Con is right around the corner and I'm determined to make my own "Queen of Hearts" Crown to wear. I've never made a crown before so this should be fun! Should I take photos in progress? Also working on fancy hat pins for Mad Hatter Hats, I love working on the details for costumes!

Congratulations to Melissa winner of the Mad Tea Party drawing! And thank you to all who stopped in for tea! I'm still making it around to everyone's party (is the saying "always late to the party"?) I'm so enchanted by the feeling the event takes on. Its like our little portal through blog land that happens every year now, amazing really. Thank you Vanessa for being such a wonderful hostess!

Mad Tea Party 2010 and Give Away Prize!

That clock is exactly two days late! Oh Alice, I do know how you feel! You see I'm very excited the Mad Tea Party will be on my Birthday this Saturday the 26th (not Unbirthday but the actual big day!) But now I know I won't be home and was feeling a little perplexed over what to do.... When I heard the rustle of leaves outside my window. Wandering out what did I catch a glimpse of but this lovely spirit.
I do believe she is dressed for tea! She beckoned for me to follow her through the garden.

I trailed behind till we came to the back garden gate, curiously there was a key left out, I opened the gate and followed her through. (she didn't need a key of course!) I have to admit I was feeling rather sheepish at this point, Would I be letting her and other ghosts of tea parties past and future down by not having a tea party on my birthday ... Then she turned and smiled and said, "Silly goose, looking glass time runs forwards and back whichever you choose!"

She then disappeared, just like that, leaving behind her hat on the gate post. I placed it reverently upon my head like a crown and raised a cup to her. Promising to remember to let time be on my side for a change!

Distracted by Shiny Objects

A Magpie Post....

I went out to purchase a bath mat, and was distracted by a giant wooden key and scissors. What do you think came home with me? Let's count hands.. Bath mat *peers about room* strange oversized objects?* Yes! you have met me!

Well these unsuspecting plain Jane scissors had to sit and wait for me to have a day off, and when I did I pounced. I think it was time for some art therapy because it took two cans of pink spray paint and a large assortment of rhinestones to complete.

I'm quite pleased with the results, this blingy pair of scissors is just what my studio and creative spirit needed!

And speaking of creative spirits I came across this great series on creativity (posted by firefluff on twitter) this article on being eccentric and creativity.

I'm not big into taking quizes but this list was an eye opener for me. You see, not only do I fit just about every item listed, I never grasped why others didn't, and often feel/felt so sad for them. Really, bored? There is so much in this world to marvel at and learn! Of course we all have off days but I can't imagine not having interests and passions. My stress is not having time for them all! I'm so fortunate to have all of you here in blogland who are so eccentric (and I mean that as a high complement!) with bright eyes and open hearts! You are much appreciated!

Clean cup Clean Cup! Well this little dandy is finally presentable! Hare, Please pour the tea, would you?

I worked my little thimbled fingers on this one, he just insisted on everything just so... well dandy! The most challenging was his little waist coat and jacket (which silly me added needle and thread after the glue driedouch ) and the most fun was making his teeny tiny hat pins! The mushroom grove was a delight to imagine and create, I hope to revisit it someday soon, maybe with another Wonderland resident.

I couldn't be happier with how the prints turned out, the colors are so rich and the mixed media pieces just pop, looks almost 3-D! available here in- My Shop

A new member has joined my mixed media Alice family, Cheshire Cat sitting pretty in a tree!

I've been in a pink mood of late and it just spilled over to this "in the pink" Cheshire kitty. I always loved how Cheshire might mad, but always so calm and cool. A good role model I think!

Sometimes I get the urge to sew, although my relationship with my seam ripper is stormy one. What I love most is gathering, finding the perfect bits of trim and velvets one thing leads to anther and I've landed into a new project. I had all good intentions of completing this on my "spring break" a bus trip to DC ( I had 15 hours after all ) but I underestimated the distraction of 45 8th graders, and motion sickness. Lets just say I wasn't very productive. But no worries, I'll be back to busy hands in no time now that I'm home again! So soon this little pile of trim should become sweet little cuffs!

I'm actually even more motivated after our trip, I don't get to travel much and I'm not much of a monument girl so I had an eye out for fashion without realizing it. Not trendy/pricey fashion of course, but what real people might be wearing in another place, especially a big city (like Philly!) Imagine my dismay to see only a sea of drab sad drab sad drab, actually worse than home! Now of course we didn't get to go clubbing, this is malls, museums and on the streets and metro. Hope I'm not offending anyone as Cliff and Stacy would tie me up and burn my closet in an heart beat (my own person style ranges from Wednesday Adams to Punky Brewster, I don't take it seriously!)
I've actually thought of starting a fashion blog but I'm afraid Cliff and Stacy would hunt me down!

The Time Has Come...

Sometimes I read a poem or hear a phrase and the images float around until I have time to land them on paper. This is one of those pieces. The quote is from Song of Solomon "The time of the singing of the birds is come" from the first time I heard it spoke of freedom in all of its aspects. My image is of the birds circling around the spirit who holds the key to their escape.

Somerset Studio Hurray!

Happy Spring! Still a bit chilly here (and I'm in Florida!) but the flowers are starting to bloom and we've packed away the mittens. I've been placing pink flowers by our front door and have a few in the studio as well, pink always makes me think of spring (and cotton candy... but then everything reminds me of candy!)

I have a bit of exciting news..two of my mixed media paintings are featured in the March/April issue of Somerset Studio! "I'm Late" and "Down the Rabbit Hole" were the two selected. This issue is chock full of whimsical wonderland creations, be sure and check it out if that's your cup of tea!

What a cutie pie! I had the pleasure to paint this little sweetie as a recent commission. She asked to be painted in her favorite dress in the style of my "Poppy" painting. It makes me smile to think of a little girl out there with this "dolly style" portrait hanging in her room!

My girls are growing so fast (one is learning to drive!)... seems like yesterday they were in little sundress like this!

I'm loving working with this paper doll method, I think I'm just thrilled to be able to some type of doll (oh woe are my sewing abilities!) I have one more Alice themed one after this then I'm off to a bride of Frankenstein one!

I hope everyone who celebrates had a wonderful Thanksgiving! Ours was small but nice, honestly its not my favorite holiday. Part of me is just sad Halloween is over and I don't like spending all day in the kitchen either. Lucky for me family brings dishes as well! I'd like to introduce you (if you haven't already met) to a most remarkable artist Stu Jenks. I was fortunate enough to visit one of his installation pieces at Mythic Journeys in Atlanta a few years ago. Wandering through the exhibit arm in arm with one of my dearest artist friends Fati, was truly one of the most magical art experiences I've ever had. It didn't feel like an art exhibit, although his work was mounted throughout, it was a journey that I felt blessed to be taking. One of those experiences that you can tuck away for when your spirit needs soothing.

"The Pool of Tears"

While painting I started thinking back to my first exposure to Alice, and it was this book. Beautifully Illustrated by Marjorie Torrey and published by Dandelion Press it was a "flip" book with "Peter Pan" on the other side. Peter Pan was one of my favorite stories while Alice on the other side was someone I wasn't quite comfortable with.
I admired Alice but her adventures made me nervous, as I grew older I started to realize that being an only child had some influence on my feelings about Wonderland. Alice stands alone, no prince or brothers to rescue her.
I actually felt daring when I flipped that book over to visit Wonderland. I had a lot to learn from Alice, she keeps her wits about her and only cries once that I remember, the pool of tears. The thought of tears so large you could swim in them like a salty sea is right up there with the disappearing cat in my childhood imagery. So I finally had a chance to paint my own "Pool of Tears" and it was like going back to visit an old friend.

I found this enchanting 1909 video that I had to share. This one of my favorite Shakespeare plays so I was delighted to learn my daughters theater group is going to perform it. Last week she came home bursting with excitement over the part she was cast for!

Came home weary and dragging after a long day at school today. Drooping along I checked my mail box and like magic my spirits soared! *Hurray for packages in the post*

Its drawing day! My daughter and I cut and folded entries under the supervision of our Pomeranian Capt. Jack who became more and more interested and the pile grew.. did he think they might be tasty? We mixed up the names and jokingly put the hat down for him to *draw* and like lightening he snapped out a name!

"Little Mermaid"

"The Little Mermaid" new commission piece just completed.
I love mermaid stories (even named my daughter Madison after the mermaid in Splash ;) but I rarely paint them. I think its because living near the coast there is so much mermaid art around (and palm trees). Strangely enough though, I chose the most classic mermaid pose and focused on capturing the sense of longing I always felt was the heart of the story.
I think I may have to paint more mermaids!

I'm so excited! I've been invited to join ehag, eclectic Halloween artist group. Ever since I was small the sense of wonder, magic and fancy that comes alive during the Halloween season enchanted me. Although my childhood Halloweens were limited to rather sad store bought costumes (do you remember the masks that had the thin elastic bands held by staples? tie on costumes that only covered the front like a drafty hospital gown, but you see it didn't matter because the magic is in the heart) the very sight of the streets filled with other masked candy bandits was enough to send my little heart a flutter.

I'm walking on clouds, dear Basia has just posted our family portrait! I fell in love with her work after an introduction by Lisa Falzon. This is the second commission she has done for my family and they are both treasures. Her work is like slipping into a magical world of softly glistening dreams.
Basia completely surprised me by portraying us as a family of wizards, she knew my hubby is an avid fencer and that I love fairy tales and bit of the exotic. I'd say she got us just perfect.

This mixed media piece will be in an exhibit next week in St. Augustine. The theme for the show is spring but little girls in coats kept floating in my mind! Floating and flying, I was fascinated with the idea of flying as a little girl. I'm quite sure I took some leaps with an umbrella with high hopes and air underfoot! I'm relieved I was able to complete her in time for the show, I have two other shows the same day so I'm hard pressed for time. One is for my students, the big county public school show. The other, I have a booth at the Historic Hibernia Arts Festival which thankfully is very close to home!

I watched a most beautiful film this weekend with my girls "The Princes' Quest"

Maybe I'm just late to the party but I hadn't heard of this gem of a movie. The story is an original fairy tale with Middle Eastern flair. The imagery is breathtakingly beautiful, with painted cut outs and jewel like scenery. I believe its computer animated but the look is hand crafted (you can see the brush strokes) I hope you get a chance to see it!

I believe I've finally completed my Swan girl! I'm sorry that the image isn't clearer, she is much to large for my scanner so I had to take a photo. (I will take her in for professional scanning soon)

I've been working on her for months and couldn't wait to share with you!

Do you think the title "Swan Child" suits her? I thought Transformation sounded a bit to obvious or heavy.

Happy Valentines Day!

I've always loved Valentines Day, with its construction paper hearts and pink frosted cupcakes.

When I was a school girl, life could be very grey. We did have an art teacher but she came to our classroom (art on a cart it was called) so there wasn't much of the get your hands dirty type art making going on. (I do remember looking forward to her visits and how kind she was, I'm sure she is part of the reason I became art teacher)

Valentines Day was different though, for one day my inner world and the outer seemed to match up a little (in my mind glitter and hearts swirled about daily) There was paste, and scissors and *gasp* glitter. We created little mailboxes out old shoe boxes! Who'd of thought! Finally things were looking up! The only thing I couldn't understand was the return of the grey ... why didn't the adult world want to live with more color and life?

Valentines is the handmade holiday more than any other. Even my junior high students still love to cut hearts and make sweet greetings, and of course so do I.

Please take a brownie I made them with my girls, I'll pour a cup of punch for you. I'd love it if you have time to share a favorite Valentine memory and we will have our own little party!

Today is the day! I put on my magic top hat and waved the enchanted Valentine wand over the .... random number generator! Yes today is February 12th, the day the gypsy caravan of One World One Heart circles round to draw the names of winners!

My prizes include an 8x10 print of "Love Bird" and an ACEO of "Philippe, the Cotton Candy Elf" both hand embelished with a touch of sparkle! I'll also include a little surprise :)

The Lady of Shalott

With Valentines around the corner I thought I'd share these beautiful romantic paintings, "Death of Elaine" and "Lancelot" by Yoshitaka Amano. They are from his "Yosei" fairy paintings.
Why do I find tragic love stories like this so compelling? It might be more all the beautiful paintings and poem surrounding it that draw me in, but the longing in this tale just tugs my heartstrings.

and a bit of "The Lady of Shalott"

"Ostare"

I had a blissful day to paint today, I've been carrying this sketch with me for a few weeks and was strangely hesitant about her colors. I also wasn't quite sure who she was. When she first appeared in my sketchbook I called her harpy. Her face however seemed a bit to sweet for that. (although I'm quite certain even harpies have their good days). As you might have noticed I lean toward soft colors in spite of myself. Pale however wouldn't due, the bird woman called for bright plumes and turned out so regal I realized she must be a spring goddess. So Ostare she is, I found so many spellings for her I hope I selected the proper one.
I found an account of her having a rabbits head and woman's body. I'd love to paint her in that form as well. I believe the same article called rabbits her minions which made me grin. Don't you love the idea of rabbit minions?

Winter Queen

Ah spoke too soon! all this balmy weather and palm trees had me lulled into early spring dreams. I do love the winter, its my favorite really. Somehow its been warm so long it felt as if winter had passed us by. Tomorrow my northern friends you may giggle at this tropical girl who dreams of snow as she searches for mittens in the swim suit drawer. I just know somewhere in my closet *peers deep into the abyss* there is a coat.. at least a jacket? Lady winter is coming to call with chills getting into the 20's by the end of the week. I can't ever remember it being this cold! I'm a bit giddy that we have a fireplace and an excuse to light it. I'm not so excited about the thought of getting up out of a snug bed in that weather!
Perhaps we will see snowflakes!

The weather here is crazy warm, my azaleas are even starting to bloom! So I'm starting work on spring inspired pieces. Spring brings to mind unbirthday parties and tea time for me. Here is a rough sketch that is part of my Alice series of the inhabitants of Wonderland. I think the colors will be golden browns and pinks for this one. I've spent much more time than I'm comfortable with working on the computer since getting the hard drive replaced and it feels really good to get a sketch down.

And for all of my fellow winter fans don't worry I still have at least one more winter painting "Star Child" in the works for you!

White Rabbit under the tree

Its great to back with you guys, my laptop failed me and I had to have the hard drive replaced. I've missed everyone online!

Isn't this little guy great? He was under my tree, a gift from hubby and my girls. He was intended to go with my Alice statue out in the garden but I'm growing so fond of him I think he might live in my studio.. do you think Alice will mind?

Transformation

Sharing a work in progress, from a book I'm working on. A Swan Princess shape shifter inspired piece. This time of year I think of letting go and shedding the old and unneeded. Transformation is a part of that I think. How we incorporate the old into the new and still manage to fly. I hope to complete her this week, I have two other pieces I'm working on as well and only one more week of holiday left!

White Rabbit

Now I can show you my collage of the White Rabbit! I made this for Anunciatta for Christmas so I've kept him under wraps till now. I had so much fun with this piece collecting just the right charms and buttons. I love the idea of him being on stage so I tried to give that effect with the darker papers. Of course his admirers have thrown roses!

Ice Castles and festivities

We spent Solstice in a cabin at Disney World. I hate to admit but thats as close to real camping as I like to get. I love the outdoors, in the day time! The weather was really cold for us Floridians, we were shivering as we watched the light shows! My youngest and I had our hair done at the Bibbity Boppity Boutique in the Castle as an early Christmas gift. we both felt like princesses (and we got to keep our tiaras! )

The site of this icy castle takes my breath away every time I see it!

We hurried home Christmas Eve to prepare for friends and family that would be arriving for holiday cheer. Had a great time with everyone even though I ended up loosing my voice!

Speaking of voices here is Christmas on Walnut Street. Our town is small enough that they close the downtown for a Christmas show and festival and it seems like the entire town shows up! I have a daughter in the chorus here and my oldest daughter is the one (with purple cat ears) setting up the sound system (she's in High School) In addition to the musical treats there are vendors up and down the streets with funnel cakes, hot coco and cookies.

The other photo is from a holiday party a friend threw that has arts and crafts for all ages, I thought you would enjoy seeing how she set everything up. There were rows of wine glasses filled with beads, dishes of glitter and stems of pipe cleaners! We had such a great time!

Wonderful news! My friend Linda is home from the hospital! She will be home for a few weeks and hopes to spend time on her art work, so I made her this get well basket filled with shiny new supplies. A hardback sketchbook, watercolor pencils papers, and pretty collage trimmings. Linda is a dear friend who is always there for everyone in her life, quietly so ..one of those angels in your life. So I'm thrilled she will take a little time for herself and her art.

I'm so thrilled, I just received this breathtaking painting in the mail by the talented Lisa Falzon
Lisa's work is so compelling, filled with enchantment and mystery. I fell in love with this piece "My Twin in the Forest" when she first posted it so you can imagine my delight when the original became available! Silly me, I'm so busy staring at it soaking it in that I haven't taken it to the frame shop. You see I know they will keep if from me for at least two weeks. *pouts*

wicked tired!

Girls mini road trip! My girls and I went on a little trip to the Indian Culture center to see a dear friend Anunciatta perform. She is an amazing Middle Eastern dancer and had brand new choreography for the show. The entire show was filled with variety and the most wonderful energy. And did I mention the vendors had baklava and brownies made with jamaican curry, coconut and lime!
(and I've been so good dieting! after the show we all went to the pancake house!)
We all crashed in one hotel room so I'm pretty tired from late night giggling with the girls.

This is a collage with a painting I did of Anunciatta while she napped after practice, I used it as the center for this collage "Sleeping Beauty" I'd love to paint her again .. this time I should catch her in action!

And now its getting cold outside, I think it might even freeze! I'm ready to get some beauty sleep myself since its back to work in the morning!

"Little Red"

Over the river ... Wishing all of my dears in blog land a most wonderful Thanksgiving! I know those of you outside the US don't celebrate it but maybe you can treat yourself to a slice of pie and think of us yanks ;)

We are busy busy readying the house for the big meal! We have a total of 10 for dinner which for us is exciting! I will be making what my daughter calls *pie marshmallow* the good ole sweet potatoes with tiny marshmallows on top. Baked until they are toasty brown....yum! Along with cranberry sauce (with marmalade) and other various dishes, of course everyone coming will bring a special dish as well. Looks nervously at scale!

What is it about fall that makes me want to nest? Everyone else spring cleans ... I arrange my long neglected nest in preparation for the holidays.
I'm even enjoying domestic activities like cooking this time of year. I just made wonderful scallops and shrimp with olive oil and garlic *yum* Maybe its the chill in the air, which in itself is a rare jewel here in Florida, or the looming specter of company arriving, but I'm all a flurry with activity that normally I would put off till tomorrow (or the day after!)

My youngest daughter had her first ensemble experience at a county chorus competition, her group made superior and she was so proud. It's almost surreal to see your child breaking away with this new talent blooming. Especially one as foreign as vocals are to me! Its been a wonderful experience for her so far and I think she may even go out for show choir next year.

Speaking of school, I can't believe its almost time for fall break! I've got so many loads of clay pots to fire for the kids .. then glaze and refire before the semester ends *scrambles* I always do this and run full force until the last minute. One day I will learn value of *winding down* Before you know it, a new semester will be here with a new eager and energetic classes! No wonder I want to savor the autum, it is when time seems to travel too fast!

I have had a little time to paint..... this is "Kitty" with her pet bird out enjoying the crisp fall sky.

seven things about me

1. I decided to become an artist as a teenager while looking at a sunset turning into a violet night sky. Nothing else seemed as important as those colors.
2. I adore flowers and plants, and dream of knowing what I'm doing in the garden.
3. I've never been out of country *sigh*
4. I love to travel!
5. As much as I love nature, I'm not much of a camper. I remember being so let down after finding out the girl scout cookie sales were to raise money for a lousy camping trip!
6. I'm adopted and wonder what ethnic background I might have.
7. I miss baking, I just never seem to have time (and I don't need to eat it!) . I sometimes look at pictures of pretty cookies and cupcakes and swoon!

A bit of the festive touches around my place, A new find for me these paper lantern style witch hats! I love the little lanterns too and trimmed them with a bit of fluff.
I just wish I had time to cook up more, holidays seem to come faster each year!

I hope everyone has a wonderful Halloween. We had a lovely Samhain service at church led by our women's group on Sunday and we are all invited to a bonfire after trick or treating on Friday at a friends campground! This will be my girls first bon fire so they are very excited! Mommy is excited too and hoping it won't be too cold!

And now a question.... What are you (or your younglings) going to be for Halloween this year?

"St. Frida the Divine with Poppies"

Frida is such a powerful figure to me on so many levels, I've longed to paint her but hesitated. I've decided there is no doing her justice I'll just try to pay tribute.

The original is mixed media, the poppies I made by hand and collaged on. I was inspired by the Veteran's Day blooms that my Grandmother wore when I was a little girl. Forevermore poppies represented loss and strength of a feminine nature to me.

All in all though the fall is my favorite part of the school year. The anticipation and eager faces of all those young people starting that adventure of Junior High, nothing like it really!

If you have young people in your life (or adore picture books like I do!) please take a look at this book I just got for my classroom, It is poignant, dreamy and powerful. A beautiful introduction to Frida for even the youngest child.
